Leadership Systems for Engineering and Operations

Your strategy can’t execute itself.

I help leaders build teams that take ownership, solve problems, and act without being told.

The leadership gap

Growth gets stuck when decisions wait on the wrong people.

Most stalled growth I’ve seen had nothing to do with strategy. The plan was fine. The leadership system wasn’t.

In an owner-led business, it looks like every real decision coming back to one person. In a larger organization, it looks like decisions stuck a level or two above the people who see the problem, technical experts promoted into management without support, and a leadership bench thinner than the org chart suggests.

Either way, the cost is the same: slow execution, missed handoffs, and problems everyone sees but nobody owns.

I work with leaders to make ownership and better decisions part of how the organization runs.

How the work fits

A practical system, built from the inside

Build leadership into the work.

Project Horizon is the framework I use to help people lead at every level of an organization. The focus is practical: help teams see what matters, take responsibility for decisions, and learn their way through the problems in front of them.

01

Clarity

Make priorities and the reason behind them easier to see.

02

Ownership

Move decisions closer to the people who see the problem.

03

Adaptability

Help teams adjust and keep moving when conditions change.

Where to begin

Practical help for the problem in front of you.

Start with the issue your team needs to move. We’ll decide together whether a focused working session or a longer leadership build makes sense.

Growing companies

Owners and leadership teams who are still the bottleneck.

Established organizations

Executives, operations and engineering leaders, and HR and L&D teams building leaders from within, across departments, plants, or sites.

About Dean

Engineer by training. Leadership builder by experience.

I’m Dean Houdeshell, founder of Innovative Coaching Strategies and creator of Project Horizon. I spent 30 years inside growing manufacturers. Inside, I rose to director of engineering, served on an executive leadership team, and led a team of application engineers across the Americas. Now I work with business owners, executive teams, and emerging leaders to strengthen leadership, improve communication, and move ideas into action.

My work is grounded in what I learned on the plant floor: people are an organization’s greatest strength, and leadership starts with developing them.

How an engagement starts

A conversation first. A system to follow.

  1. Clarity Session

A free discovery call about where things stand and what’s stalling. No pitch, no assessment — just a real conversation.

  2. Deep dive

A closer look at your leadership structure, decisions, and execution path — enough to see the gap clearly.

  3. Engagement

Coaching, consulting, or a full Horizon install — scoped to the problem, the team, and the timeline.

  4. Ongoing support

Practical follow-through as leaders take ownership and the work sticks — not a program that fades after kickoff.

Common questions

Straight answers, before you book.

What happens in the first call?

We talk about where things actually stand: what’s working, what’s stalled, and what it’s costing you. By the end, we’ll both know whether there’s a useful next step — and if there isn’t, I’ll say so.

What does an engagement cost?

Engagements are scoped to the work, not to a package price. The Clarity Session is free; after the deep dive, you’ll get a clear proposal with a defined scope, timeline, and investment before anything begins.

Who is this for?

Two kinds of organizations. Owner-led companies that have outgrown their leadership structure, and established engineering, manufacturing, and industrial organizations that need more people who can think, decide, and act without waiting on the level above them. If your team already does that, you’re not the audience, and that’s good news.

How long do engagements run?

It depends on the problem. A focused working session is measured in days; a full leadership install across sites or levels runs in months. Either way, the scope and timeline are agreed before we start.

What if it’s not a fit?

We decide together, early. If the model isn’t right for your situation, you’ll hear that directly in the Clarity Session — along with a suggestion of what might serve you better.

Free leadership growth assessment

Where is your leadership system today?

A short self-assessment for owners and senior leaders: how well direction, ownership, and adaptability are actually working in your organization — and where the gap is costing you.
